An Ode to the Hoody Analysis


'An Ode to the Hoody' is an article written by Minsky, which outlines the importance that the item of clothing, the hoody, has on society.

The article begins in a colloquial nature. the beginning line 'Arrrgh, so it's happened.' immediately catches the attention of a younger demographic. By using vernacular language, such as 'shagging' and 'piss taking', it appeals a lot more to younger generations of males, primarily from the ages of 17 to 25, which is probably the demographic that the author is trying to reach out to. language like this only seems to occur within the first paragraph, whereas the rest of the article seems to shift to a more formal style of writing. This technique may have been implemented to engage the reader and draw their attention more easily.

There are a lot of lexical fields of war and battle that are indicated in the whole article. For example, the hoody is referred to as an 'ally', evident in the first line of the second paragraph, 'However, one ally exists.' This use of an abstract noun could perhaps indicate a separation and divide  between people who wear hoody's and people who believe strongly against them, almost as if they are at war with each other. By describing the hoody as an 'ally', it creates a relationship between the reader and their hoody, as it allows them to visualise a scenario of the hoody-wearer going to war with their 'companion' against their rivals.

a lot of personification of the hoody is used throughout the article. An example of this is in the line 'he lies there', identifying the hoody with human-like characteristics using the pronoun 'he'. The writer also comments on the positives of the hoody, and that it is more than just an item of clothing, but a comforting and an essential need for the writer to win support and persuade the reader to the writers opinion. A metaphor 'our best friend' is also used to build a connection between the reader and the writer, as the use of the collective pronoun 'our' is inclusive, therefore making the reader feel more engaged and involved.
