Shower Gel for Women
Shower Gel for Women
This text on the side of the bottle of 'Anatomicals' is a passage aimed directly at women. It depicts women to all have similar characteristics; analytical, easily annoyed and clean freaks. By using a repetition of 'blooming' and also rhetorical questions, it demonstrates that the writer of this text believes that women should feel irritated by men leaving a mess and being overall untidy. It creates a division between men and women, as women are presented to be the more organised and tidy gender, while men are demonstrated as a nuisance and hassle, by creating all of this mess, shown in the lines 'he' also squeezed the blooming toothpaste from the top again.' and 'he's blooming well dropped his dirty towels on the floor.' The anonymity of describing the man as 'the blooming man in your life' sets up an idea that the man is insignificant compared to the woman, as the writer is speaking directly to the reader, who is most likely to be a woman, evident when the writer says 'wouldn't you know it'. Also, this phrase almost creates a disbelief in the writer, as they seem to be unable to grasp how much of a nuisance the man is, by 'dropping his dirty towels on the floor' and 'squeezing the toothpaste from the top'. Also, the interjection 'oh' creates an element of surprise, adding to the writers disbelief.
The repetitive use of the intensifier 'blooming' could be used to create a sense of humour and make the text seem more light-hearted, as without this intensifier it would seem like more of an attack rather than a simple, funny text on the back of a shampoo bottle. Also, the lack of capital letters in this text demonstrate that this text is to be taken non seriously, and to take it as more of a colloquial passage. Also the rhetorical question 'why can't he just put them in the blooming laundry basket?' followed by the line 'never mind, at least you can enjoy a shower with this floral body cleanser.' promotes the product in a positive way, as it seems to be something that the woman can use in the midst of the stress of dealing with the 'man in her life'. This 'body cleanser' is described as having a 'floral' scent, implying that in order to be a woman, you have to smell feminine and use feminine products. The industry of skin care products seem to create different products to tailor to each gender. The bottle is presented in a hot pink colour with simple font and format. It implies that a woman has to like pretty and feminine colours.
The phrase 'we only want you for your body' that concludes the text creates a sense of obscurity, as the collective pronoun 'we' implies that there is more than one person behind the writer of this text, and also the lack of context and reasoning behind the message. The phrase is also highlighted in a different coloured font, illustrating that the writer wants it to stand out to whoever is reading. It also creates a shock factor because of the content of the sentence. It implies that women are only wanted and acknowledged for their body and nothing else, objectifying them.
